Disclosures

These disclosures apply to everything on this website, including the conceptual diagram on the home page and any conversation that starts from it. They are set at full reading size on purpose. If a page about indexed universal life buries this section, that tells you something.

Guaranteed and non-guaranteed elements

Indexed universal life policies contain both guaranteed and non-guaranteed elements. Non-guaranteed values, including current interest crediting, current caps, current participation rates, current spreads and current policy charges, are not guaranteed. They can change, and actual results may be lower than any non-guaranteed values shown in an illustration.

Index crediting is not market participation

Index crediting is not direct participation in a stock market index or in any security. You do not own an index, shares, mutual funds or an investment account. Index credits do not include dividends paid on the stocks within an index, and crediting is limited by the cap, participation rate, spread and crediting method the carrier declares.

Policy charges

Policy charges reduce cash value. These may include premium loads, cost of insurance charges, per-unit and administrative charges, rider charges, and surrender charges in the early policy years. Charges are deducted whether or not the policy receives an index credit in a given period.

Loans and withdrawals

Policy loans and withdrawals reduce the cash value and the death benefit, may increase the risk of lapse, and may have tax consequences. Withdrawals above cost basis may be taxable. If a policy is classified as a modified endowment contract, distributions are taxed on gains first and may also incur a 10% additional tax before age 59½. A policy that lapses or is surrendered with an outstanding loan can produce taxable income. If the policy lapses, coverage ends.

This page is educational

It is not tax, legal, accounting or investment advice. LifePolicies-Help and its agents do not provide tax or legal advice. Tax treatment of life insurance depends on federal and state law and on how a policy is funded and maintained over time. Consult your own tax advisor or attorney about your situation.

Licensing and availability

This page is an invitation to inquire. It is not an offer to sell or a solicitation to buy insurance in any state where LifePolicies-Help or the responsible agent is not licensed. Product availability, features, riders and rates vary by state and by carrier. All coverage is subject to underwriting approval and to the terms of the policy as issued.

No projections appear on this website

No policy values, rates of return or income figures are projected on this page. Any illustration of policy values is produced only through carrier-approved illustration systems, after a discovery conversation, and in accordance with applicable illustration regulations. Every illustration shows both a guaranteed column and a non-guaranteed column. Guarantees are backed solely by the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance carrier.

How to read this site

Every mark on this website follows one rule, so you can tell at a glance which part of a policy is a promise and which part is not.

Solid. Stated in the policy contract. Guaranteed by the issuing carrier.
Dotted, dashed or hatched. Not guaranteed. Set by the carrier, and able to change.
Split. A guaranteed minimum with a non-guaranteed part above it.
Buttons and form controls sit outside this system. An outlined button is never a claim about a policy.
